To celebrate the 2021 Earth Day, the Indonesian Carmelite NGO launched vertical farming project at Karmel Syanti Argo (‘syanti’ means peace while ‘argo’ means mount) which functions also as the Laudato Si’ Centre in Pasuruan, East Java, Indonesia.
The purpose of the project is to teach poor urban people to produce vegetables in a limited space. By producing vegetables themselves they will spent less money for their consumption. Moreover, by doingbthis they help reduce carbon footprints due to the decrease in the use of fuel to transport vegetables from villages to cities. Furthermore, oxigen produced in the photosyntesis process of the vegetables also helps maintain the quality of the air in the cities. Finally, they sustain the environment.
